Steve Spurrier apologizes for walking out on press conference
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier apologized to the media during his weekly teleconference Sunday after walking out on them last week following the 45-42 overtime loss to Tennessee on Nov. 1.
“I need to apologize for not talking after that last ballgame we had here at Williams-Brice,” Spurrier said. “I came in there and made a quick statement and hit the road, and I should have stayed there and took a few questions and faced the music. So I apologize for that. I’ll try not to ever let that happen again.”
Spurrier made an opening statement following the loss and then got up and walked out without taking questions.
“I don’t need to take any questions, “ Spurrier said following the game. “You guys watched it. I need to just get out of here.”
The Football Writers Association of American sent a letter of complaint to the SEC following the shortened press conference, saying that Spurrier’s postgame actions were unacceptable.
Spurrier was clearly frustrated after his team lost a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. The Gamecocks have lost five games this season, the most they have lost since going 9-5 in 2010. Since then, South Carolina hasn’t lost more than two games in any of the past three seasons.
